Several members of these lists have applied for and received SARE (Sustainable Ag Research & Education) grants from USDA to do production or marketing-related projects. This news release from the North Central Region SARE has the calendar of grant deadlines for the 2001 funding cycle, if folks want to think about working on a grant for next year. It's a great way to get some $$ to try out an idea that you have, if that idea somehow fits with their sustainable ag mission. I'd be happy to share our experiences in submitting a grant if folks have questions. -Michael Seipel, Callao, MO (mseipel@truman.edu)

USDA SARE Program Awards 87 Grants in 2000 in Support of Sustainable Agriculture
Lincoln, Neb. -- In its 13th year, the USDA's North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program will invest a total of more than $2.1 million in 87 grants to teams of organizations, institutions and individuals striving to improve agriculture and sustain communities in 2000 and beyond.
"Farmers, scientists, agricultural educators and the general public are realizing that sustainable agriculture offers positive answers for pressing environmental, economic and social problems," said Christine Lietzau, chair of NCR SARE's Administrative Council from the Michigan Department of Agriculture. "SARE provides opportunities for a variety of people to study and educate others on the benefits of alternative farm and ranch systems."
Awards will be distributed under thre competitive grant programs:
$1,180,533 to 19 projects in the Research and Education Grant Program: Awarded to scientists, educators and other organizations and multi-disciplinary teams exploring sustainable systems and practices.
$390,209 to 8 projects and $238,000 to 13 land grant universities in the Professional Development Program: Awarded to collaborative teams developing sustainable agriculture educational programs for agricultural educators and to land grants for implementation of state strategic plans in sustainable agriculture education.
$326,128 to 44 projects in the Producer Grant Program: Awarded to farmers and ranchers experimenting with sustainable agriculture on individual operations and with farmer groups.
Also, $28,814 will go to 4 projects in the Diversity Enhancement Program put in place to fund projects in sustainable agriculture led by underserv communities. New project coordinators from 12 North Central states will explore community food systems, participatory website development, aquaculture specialty forestry products, whole-farm planning, sustainable range systems, soil quality, marketing alternatives, weed management, management intensive grazing, pasture-based dairy systems, and a variety of other topics.

Funding for the popular Producer Grant Program, in which farmers and ranchers receive grants for on-farm research and demonstration, has tripled since its inception in 1992. In 2000, the USDA's National Agroforestry Center contributed approximately $50,000 to 7 agroforestry projects in the producer program. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service contributed nearly $71,000 to 10 projects exploring value-added marketing enterprises for farmers and ranchers.
"We appreciate the partnerships with other USDA agencies," Lietzau said. "This allows us to fund more high-caliber projects and to share project results with a broader audience."
NCR SARE's Administrative Council and Technical Committee met four times in 2000 to review and recommend proposals. Composed of agricultural educators and researchers, producers and nonprofit organization representatives, the Council submitted its 2000 recommendations to the USDA for final approval. The next grant cycle (2001) is as follows:
Research and Education Grant Program: Call for Preproposals, July 14, 2000. Due, Sept. 8, 2000. Professional Development Program: Call for Proposals, early October 2000. Due early February 2001.
Producer Grant Program: Call for Proposals, February 1, 2000. Due late March 2000.
