Breeder's Bio
LaVern Charles
5
This months Breeder's Bio takes us to is Charles Ranch, home of ISBA members Ken and LaVern Charles.
Charles Ranch is located 35 miles south of Grand Junction, Colorado on the Western Slope, near Delta, Colorado. Their 3 daughters grown and married, Ken and LaVerne moved to this area 7 years ago after falling in love with the peaceful farming and ranching community.
Verns herd names, thats right, herd name(s), include Verns and Goats-By-Golly. And, by golly, they got some goats! Try 130 of them! Vern has even drafted her grandson into the frey with his own herdname of Brown Swiss. Even Vern admits that she must have some screws loose to raise this many, but, according to her, I love em!
As you might guess, Verns full time job is the ranch. Besides goats, Vern and Ken have raised every kind of animal except for Llamas and those big killer chickens or Emus and Ostriches. For many years, she raised cattle, but admits that her goats are a lot less trouble, easier to get along with and more productive!
Verns menagerie includes Alpines, Saanens, LaManchas, Obers, Toggs, Boars, and the blue eyed Nigerian Dwarfs. When asked why she was interested in raising Sables, she emphatically states, Why not!
They are unique and productive, just like the black Obers that I raise. And since I go crazy at times trying to figure out which black Ober is which, can you see me trying to figure out a whole pasture of Saanens? Thats why I sold my most of my white Saanens and started raising Sables. They are large and the wethers make excellet pack goats. Right now I have about 30.
Vern The Judge
When Vern is not galavanting around the country selling or buying animals, she relaxes by reading, knitting, crocheting and using her computer. Come New Years Eve, she celebrates her Anniversary with her hubby, Ken.
