Breeder's Bio

December 2000
Hello! Let me introduce our family.
Husband and dad, Philip, is a beekeeper and part-time truck driver who hauls his bees from PA to FL to Me and ND for pollination and honey production. Daughter Christiane is a home schooled, mission-minded, 17 yr. old who loves children, horses and her goats. And I am Becky, candle-crafter, fudge-maker, goat-milker, salesperson. We have a family owned and operated business, The Land of Milk & Honey. Too long a name for herd name so we are Honey Acres.
Our first goat was a Saanen *billy* (why does everyone do that ??) brought home to me by my husband over 20 years ago. From there it went to all kinds of grades until we settled on Toggenburgs. The Toggs were sold in '89 when my husband needed the barn because of outgrowing the honey shed. Two yrs later I got a couple registered Saanens just for personal milk, and renewed my membership with ADGA. Then came a couple Nubians. The next year a friend talked me into showing. Our first show we went home with a GCH leg on our 5 yr. old Saanen, a GCH leg on our 2 yr. old Nubian and a Best Baby Buck in Show win! We were hooked!
A year later we went on DHIR milk test and did our first Linear Appraisal session. We have had 3 does on top ten in the last 6 years and in '99 all our mature does appraised from 87 to 91. That same year our first sable was born. Although it took a while to get over the shock, I decided to keep her. I have not been disappointed. Honey Acres Classic Karaoke, named for 'singing to someone else's tune', as a yrlg has won her first GCH leg, and been BOB and BUOB, and earned her star in milk and butterfat. What more could you ask for?
Saanens are my main love in goats because of their gentle, quiet nature. My husband asked me recently how long I intended to keep goats. My reply? "............all my life."

Need A Therapist?????As a practicing Caprine Counselor, I can clearly see that you are suffering from GDS -- Goat Delusional Syndrome. The basic symptoms include:
1. Frequent and ongoing conversations with one or more goats.
2. Assigning human attributes such as personality to goats i.e., "That goat is so selfish -- such a snob -- so greedy -- so possessive -- so jealous.")
3. Over-sensitivity andover protectiveness (i.e., taking offense when someone refers to goats as mere "livestock."
4. Periodic insomnia due to worry about goats --walking out to the barn after midnight just to "check on things."
5. Considering Christmas presents and/or treats for "special goats.
The advanced symptoms of GDS include:
1. Hugging and kissing goats --especially, BUCKS!
2. Addressing goats with terms of endearment (i.e., sugar, sweetie, honey, baby)
3. Eating only half of an apple and pretending you're full -- just so you can share the remainder with a goat.
4. Remembering every goat's birthday without referring to a calendar or registration papers -- AND, expecting everyone else in the family to share your excitement at the goat's birthday party.
5. Spending an inordinate amount of time on internet goat sites and emailing perfect strangers about your goats.
6. Canceling vacations because of goats.
7. Missing church because a goat is due to deliver.
8. Buying a bigger farm or ranch so you can buy more goats.
9. Buying goats on credit -- putting goats on lay-away -- saving for months to buy a single goat.
10. Taking a second job or second mortgage to support your goat habit.
11. Joining a 12-Step Program or support group because of your goat addiction.
12. Insisting that family holiday gatherings are at your farm/ranch because you can't bear the thought of the goats being alone for the holidays.
13. And finally, trying to find decorative uses for goat berries -- such as painting and stringing them like cranberries for your Christmas tree.
