New research Program Looking For Goat Breeders
A project has been started to study an injectable castrant. The product is currently in the final stages of FDA approval for use in dogs. The researcher has used it in dogs and wolves, and it appears to be painless, safe and effective.Being a large animal resident, the researcher was immediately drawn to it's potential as a non-painful, less stressful mode of castration in farm animals. The project has 2 parts. For the first part I will give an intratesticular injection of the compound at various dosages to young bucks, monitor them for 7 days, then surgically castrate them and examine the testes for histological changes indicative of sterilzation. If there is evidence that the compound works as well in goats as in dogs then we'll procede to the second part....the ultimate test is to inject young males, let them reach puberty and perform a breeding soundness exam...testicular size, ability to ejaculate, semen quality(if any) and testosterone levels will be studied.
I want to use owned goats and return the animals to the owners rather than purchase and dispose of goats...personal ethics regarding research, which is why I'm turning to the goat community for support.
