Q: How high in fat are goat cheeses?
A: Most goat cheeses contain about 6 grams of fat per ounce, which is almost 30 percent lower than standard cheddar and Swiss. That's more fat than you'll find in a true "low-fat" cheese (which has no more than 3 grams of fat per ounce), but it's comparable to the many "reduced-fat" cheeses. There is plenty of room for goat cheeses in a balanced diet, as long as you eat modest portions. Remember that fat can add up quickly; the recommended one-ounce portion is only the size of a ping-pong ball.
Q: What is the latest news on the benefit of chromium supplements?
A: The mineral chromium is essential for the functioning of insulin. Several studies have found that some diabetics can control their blood sugars better with chromium supplements. Researchers also are studying chromium's potential benefits for some cases of high blood pressure. But despite the advertisements you see, chromium has no proven effect on body fat or muscle-building. Chromium is found naturally in whole grains (like whole-wheat bread), meat and cheese. If you eat a diet that includes plenty of whole grains, there is no evidence that you require a chromium supplement. On the other hand, if you are having trouble controlling your blood sugar, blood pressure or triglycerides, 200 micrograms (mcg) of chromium a day poses no known risks. Supplements work only in those whose chromium levels are low (adding more will not help someone who already gets enough), and any beneficial results will be seen within a couple of months.
Q: Do laxatives help with weight control?
A: No! Calories from the foods you eat have largely been absorbed into the body by the time a laxative takes effect. The weight loss seen on the scale following the use of stimulant-type laxatives (including those labeled "natural") is due to a substantial loss of water, which is replaced within hours or days by regular eating and drinking. The weight you regain when laxative use is stopped is not extra body fat, but signals that your body has replaced water loss. Fiber ("bulk") laxatives usually do not cause water loss, but are not associated with weight loss either. Use laxatives only as directed by your doctor for specific medical problems. For overall good health, you should get your fiber from a balanced diet that is centered around whole grains, vegetables and fruits. Such a diet promotes both good health and a healthy weight.
