Sable Task Force Formed

ISBA has named a Task Force to work with the ADGA Registration Committee and the Saanen Breeders Task Force, on the motion made at the 2002 ADGA convention by Jamie Burks, District 5 director, and long time Saanen breeder.

The motion was to look at putting the sables back into the Saanen herdbook. The Registration Committee was charged with coming back to the board next year, 2003, with suggestions on how this could be done.

This is NOT what the majority of Sable breeders want, but in order not be considered by the ADGA board as unwilling to work with ADGA, it was agreed we would consider this, hence the Task Force.

Members of the ISBA Task Force are:

CONVENTION REPORT

Many directors were surprised to receive a list of over 700 Sables out of only purebred and American Saanens. Of those 700 about one third were purebred and two thirds were American. This is a much higher percentage of purebred Saanens producing Sables than purebred Saanens in ratio to American Saanens.

Someone mentioned that they expected the Sable breeders to come throwing snowballs in the water but were surprised that we brought a veritable cannon Some were not happy and vocalized personally and in the BOD meeting that they were offended that they had not been asked first, that they were angry, and that not all the animals listed as Sables were not so. [This last statement was in error; every animal listed as a Sable was indeed a Sable.

At the BOD meeting on Wednesday, a couple of the requirements for new breeds procedure was brought up: namely J.1.e. and J.1.f on page 33. Someone mentioned "Sable loophole," and the discussion became heated. One director even moved that the word "live" [for all four generations] be inserted, but that was voted down. As it was, J.l.e. and J.1.f. were combined to mean "At least 100 animals of four generations of the breed conforming to breed standard.

The Registration Committee reported on Thursday.

Gwen Goodey, ISBA Sec. Tres
