Feature Article Documented Colored Saanens in the
AMGRA
[ First 10 Volumes ]
by Gwen Goodey
Goats that are referenced at least twice as grandparents (unless I recognized the sire or dam from previous entries) in the 10 volumes I scanned are listed here as color carriers; this is a hasty report; parents of colored kids are listed. I have not had enough time to research carefully. More animals could be included, but I did not want to do genealogy as much as to find the ones that definitely did produce color. - Gwen

< SNIP> Most importantly, we were able to verify with a great deal of certainty that the historical registry documents that have never been entered into the computer are complete. There is one old volume that begins with some of the Strucker importation of Saanens.
It was interesting to note that animals could be entered into the registry according to rule "2" which appeared to be an owner statement that the animal milked 2 quarts per day. Another interesting aspect was a gentleman who said to start all his animal names with the same name (the original herdname concept?) since animals in the registry were coming up with duplicate names and the owners were being asked to put an initial or something at the beginning or end. I think that is why there were so many animals that were Chieftain I, Chieftain II, Chieftain III etc. I also noticed Saanens of color entered as purebred and apparently this continued well into the 1930's. It led Shari and I to ask Dan when it was that only white Saanens were accepted into the registry. He was going to try and research that and hopefully with our new organization of the minutes, he will be able to find that information <end of snip>

Victor 224. Much of it is about the dam, Bella 389, who was imported by Fred Stucker of Liberty, NY and was " . . . a very outstanding doe whose progeny was destined to have far reaching results among the Saanens bred in thiscoutry," and " . . . a fine large doe of excellent dairy type, pure white and naturally hornless, -- a 16 lb doe."
Only seven of her descendants were recorded by AMGRA, six bucks and one doe (the only one she ever had, Swiss Echo 390. The author says, "Of one of Bella's bucks, Excelsior, I have already written, and now we will see what can be said of Victor 224, who was two years older than Excelsior and who was a full brother to Swiss Echo 390."
He goes on to quote a Mr. Will H. Miller, "Comins [his owner] told me that Victor's sire, Great Caesar, was the largest buck ever imported, measuring 39 inches at the shoulders and had VIOLENT horns." The author says that "IN searching through the available sources of information including the first sixteen volumes of the AMGRA records, we find eighty-seven of the progeny of Victor recorded, of these sixty-four were does, twenty-three bucks.
In Vol I many of the goats recorded therein it is not stated if they had, or had not horns, and neither is the color given. So we find eighteen of Victor's offspring whose color is not given, but from other sources we are led to believe that these eighteen, or practically all of them at least, were pure white. Sixty-six are given as pure white and three were off-color.
Of these latter, two were grade Toggenburg does, and one from a different importation from the Stucker strain." [Please note that this doe, Bella 389 is considered purebred Saanen, but listed in the AMGRA as 50% Toggenburg and 50% Saanen]1. 43242 Rochester's Best / white w a few dark hairs on spine.
